Ballet Classes Birmingham
Ballet dancing dates back to the 17th century and is characterised by light, graceful movements and the use of pointe shoes for girls and lifting and jumping by boys. Ballet is an important subject as it is the foundation of all other dance styles.
Pupils at Spotlight start off in Beginner Ballet and progress through the ballet grades to professional performance and teaching examinations.
Spotlight Birmingham pupils have experienced great success in ballet. Dozens of pupils have successfully auditioned to perform with the English Youth Ballet at the Wolverhampton Grand in professional productions of the Nutcracker, Giselle, Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. They have also appeared in Matthew Bourne’s Lord of the Flies at the Birmingham Hippodrome and in the UK tour of Angelina Ballerina: the Mousical.
Pupils have also appeared on national television with Wayne Sleep modelling Birmingham Royal Ballet costumes for the hit show Everything Must Go.
Spotlight Birmingham Ballet pupils have been accepted onto a variety of prestigious ballet training programmes including the Royal Ballet Junior Associates, the Royal Ballet Mid Associates and Elmhurst Associates. Pupils have also been spotted for special boys only and educational programmes with the Birmingham Royal Ballet.
Government-recognised ballet exams are offered with both the International Dance Teacher’s Association (IDTA) and Royal Academy of Dance (RAD). The RAD lessons at Spotlight Stage School are taken by an RAD examiner. The vast majority of pupils gain the top Honours / Distinction mark. The top mark received by a Spotlight pupil to date is 98% which is shared between Kasey Robinson (for IDTA Grade 4) and Amiyah Josephs (for RAD Grade 1). Pupils have been nominated for numerous ballet scholarships due to gaining some of the top marks in the country for their examinations.
