Pupils can attend Spotlight for fun and fitness, to make new friends, to increase self-
All pupils perform in a 4 night show every year at a professional theatre to over 1,300 people.
Other amazing performance opportunities are available for all pupils at prestigious venues including Disneyland Paris, West End Theatres, O2 Arena, Wembley, Silverstone, N.E.C. and I.C.C., as well as all theatres in the Midlands.
The school has a multi-award winning competition team that represents England abroad at the Dance World Cup and has won 19 world titles and 24 British titles.
Spotlight has a 100% A*-C pass rate in external examinations with the I.D.T.A., R.A.D. and L.C.M., with numerous pupils gaining scholarship nominations for receiving the top marks in the country.
Our in-school agency offers pupils the chance to audition for professional / paid performance work as part of their training. Pupils have appeared in an array of TV dramas / commercials, films, modelling projects and professional stage shows (including West End and national tours).
Each subject is taught by a specialist teacher who has professional experience in their field. We don’t use dance teachers to teach singing or drama teachers to teach gymnastics! The school also attracts a variety of ‘guest’ teachers. All staff are fully qualified and DBS checked.
Our large membership allows us to split classes by both age and ability, giving all pupils the best possible tuition. Nobody feels out of their depth and nobody feels held back.
As we are a stage school rather than a dance school we attract many boys and, as such, are able to run specialist Boys-Only classes.
Whilst we do encourage training in all subjects to become an all-round performer, pupils can just attend the classes they are most interested in if they prefer. Many stage schools have a rigid timetable which forces children to study all disciplines – at Spotlight we only want you to take the lessons you enjoy.
There is no audition to be a pupil at Spotlight as there are different classes to cater for all ability ranges. There are lessons suitable for beginners of all ages, right up to those working at a professional level and towards teaching qualifications. All we ask for is dedication and a will to succeed.
Correct clothing and footwear is required to ensure the learning process and movement is not restricted by unsuitable attire.
Uniform also helps evoke a feeling of pride in being a Spotlight member. However, it is not necessary to purchase any specialist items of clothing or footwear until you and your child are sure Spotlight is the right school for you.
In order to maintain uniformity in colour and style, all items should be ordered through the school. Hair must be tied back at all times and no loose jewellery may be worn.
We are fortunate to receive financial support from the National Lottery, Birmingham Airport and Solihull Community Foundation, along with numerous local businesses. These grant-making bodies and companies have recognised the opportunities we offer pupils at Spotlight and have helped us keep our fees and other costs much lower than other training institutions. All money raised from our annual shows is also ploughed back into the school to further benefit pupils. Main classes start from just £2.00 (30 mins) and additional classes start from just £1.00 (30 mins). For individual lesson prices please see Classes page
Unlike most stage schools we do not charge termly. Instead fees are paid weekly before each class is undertaken. We don’t charge termly for several reasons;
- Paying weekly is more flexible and realistic for most parents.
- You may not want to commit to a term/course of lessons until you know your child enjoys Spotlight, or in case s/he stops enjoying the classes.
- It is unfair for parents to have to pay for non-attended classes due to illness, holiday, etc. At Spotlight, providing prior notice is given, you do not have to pay for any class you do not attend (the only exception is private lessons and additional weekday classes which must be paid for, even if prior notice of absence is given).
Please note – a one-off insurance fee of £1.00 is required before the first class is undertaken.
