Modern jazz emerged as a rejection of, or rebellion against, classical ballet. It is strong and stylish and can be performed to a variety of rhythms. This dance form works on leaps, turns, kicks, flexibility, musicality, contrast and emotion.
Pupils at Spotlight in Solihull start off in Beginner Modern and progress through the modern jazz grades to professional performance and teaching examinations.
Solihull Spotlight pupils have experienced great success in modern jazz. They have performed the style at numerous prestigious venues including in the West End and Disneyland Paris. Their training has helped them secure roles in many professional productions which require a high level of jazz dance including UK tours of The Lion King and travelling the world on cruise performing on cruise ships.
Spotlight Stage School has won world titles in Modern Dance at the Dance World Cup. Pupils have also been selected to feature in the International Dance Teacher’s Association training DVDs (grade exams and vocational exams) to demonstrate the Modern Jazz syllabus to other teachers around the world.
Government-recognised modern exams are offered with the International Dance Teacher’s Association (IDTA). The vast majority of pupils gain the top Honours / Distinction mark. The top mark received by a Spotlight pupil is 97% which is shared between Jessica Ilsley, Lucy Moist & Charlie Robinson. Pupils have been nominated for numerous modern scholarships due to gaining some of the top marks in the country for their examinations.
